SUCCESSFUL SEARCH & RESCUE: 16-year-old found safe and sound!
SANDWICH – Several agencies joined the Sandwich Police Department in searching for a missing autistic teen last evening.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video Report, the search eventually involved additional police and firefighters from nearby agencies.
Searchers were able to ping a GPS tracking device, which placed the 16-year-old in the area of Sandy Neck Beach.
The Barnstable Police K-9 Unit, along with a couple of additional K-9 Units from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department were called in to search surrounding neighborhoods.
It was cold and windy during the time of the search which caused searchers additional concern.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m., just over an hour into the search, two Barnstable Natural Resource Officers located the young man walking along the “Marsh Trail” which stretches along the southern side of the Sandy Neck Beach Park.
The teen was brought back to a temporary command center set up at the Sandy Neck Beach gatehouse, where he was checked out by Sandwich EMTs and transported to Cape Cod Hospital as a precaution.
The following HN Video contains brief on-camera interviews with Chief John Burke of the Sandwich FD; Chief Joe Maruca of the West Barnstable FD; Nina Coleman, Sandy Neck Park Manager; and Donna Bragg, Sandy Neck Operations Supervisor.
