HYANNIS – At about 5pm, police and rescue rushed to the secluded woods near the airport at the end of Mary Dunn Road for a 39-year-old man who had just been shot by a hunter. A female had called 911 and said she heard a gunshot and saw a man staggering out of the woods.
Patrolman Dan Ruth was one of the primary officers and first on the scene. He observed the male shooting victim, saw the buckshot entry wounds, and was amazed the man was still able to stand on his own. Hyannis Rescue arrived soon after…
Hyannis Rescue transmitted over the radio that the man had been hit in the back upper shoulder and neck area with buckshot. They also radioed they were transporting him to CCH and that his current condition was stable.
According to Barnstable Police, the 39-year-old Marston’s Mills man had been out jogging with his dog when a hunter mistook him for a deer and shot him. The shooting victim was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt and other clothing that would not be easily identified by hunters.
The jogger was struck twice by shotgun pellets with his dog alongside him in the area of the Barnstable Water Shed property.
The shooting victim is being treated at CCH for shotgun pellet injuries to his upper back and hands. He was last listed in stable condition and getting a CAT Scan…
The hunter was reportedly part of a “hunting party” when he saw what he thought was a deer and opened fire.
The hunter, Sean C. Houle, age 47, of Marston’s Mills was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Ammunition/Primer, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon (a spring loaded knife), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Careless or Negligent Use of a Weapon Causing Injury.
Houle is being held on $5000 cash bail at the Barnstable Police Department and is scheduled to be arraigned in Barnstable First District Court Tuesday morning.
The hunting accident is under investigation by the BPD and the Massachusetts Environmental Police. The Yarmouth Police are also assisting due the very close proximity to the Yarmouth town line…
