[UPDATED – Malik Jackson knocks out Abraham] VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Some superb professional fights last Saturday evening…
HYANNIS – There were some superb professional fights last Saturday evening… while the main event, however, was not what fans were hoping for in terms of a worthy challenger for HyTown’s Heavyweight Champion, Jesse Barboza. Barboza showed up well prepared for the fight but his opponent simply did not – more on that fight and all the others as the footage is processed.
HN will continue uploading highlights of all five fights… but that will need to be done gradually, so please be patient and check back as this page continues to update within the next few days…
12/1/2015 UPDATE: Video highlights of the Malik Jackson vs. Bryan Abraham fight.
The opening rounds featured mostly dancing, bobbing, and weaving. Both fighters were punching with very few connections. But with encouragement from his corner, Malik Jackson discovered his jab would get him what he wanted.
After a few tentative jabs, Jackson began to discover openings which enabled him to follow through with heavier punches. In short, Jackson started connecting when Abraham did not. It was an engaging example of Jackson’s discipline, but one that almost bordered on being too cautious, especially when you compare this knockout with last August’s fight where Jackson knocked his opponent completely out the ring.
In the forth round, Jackson led with a stinging left corkscrew jab that opened the door for a devastating right cross which landed on the left side of Abraham’s head, delivering him back onto the mat. Abraham was able to find his way back to his feet, but not for long. Jackson smelled blood, charging his dazed opponent with a furious right, quickly followed by a stiff left. Abraham was back on the mat and the referee immediately jumped in to stop the contest.
HN had the opportunity to speak with New Jersey’s Malik Jackson the night before the fight. Jackson is a quiet, but very friendly young man, who loves talking about boxing and the fighting game. He’s a promising ambassador for the sport… and it’s an absolute pleasure to watch him fight.
Jackson’s footwork is tight and well spaced for the most part, although sometimes predictable (to be hypercritical). Jackson also needs to focus more on centering his balance as he follows through going forward. He was clearly reaching for power, but it’s overreaching that may land him in trouble eventually. There were a couple of times where Jackson was off balance after punching, which a keen fighter will see and capitalize on.
Malik is able to hit hard with both hands and possesses incredible focus. When Malik Jackson steps into the ring you know he showed up for work. He has talent, speed, and explosive game ending power. In the fight world, a fighter may be strong enough to knock over an Ox. But it’s the rare fighter who possesses discipline, and knows when to unleash his damaging stopping velocity.
Keep an eye on this kid!

Gonsalves vs. Corral

The Paul Gonsalves vs. Jose Humberto Corral fight clips you’re about to see cover all 8 rounds. Gonsalves was hoping to stop Corral with a knockout in the middle rounds, but Corral, formally a member of the Mexican national team, lived up to his reputation as being an experienced fighter with staying power. Both fighters connected in each and every round. But it was Gonsalves who dominated on the score cards.
We spoke with Gonsalves immediately after the fight and he shared his strategy as to why he needed to be extra careful with this very crafty opponent. Although Gonsalves won by a unanimous decision, Corral remained tough and determined throughout the entire bout. Any misstep by Gonsalves in the later rounds would mean risking being hit with a potentially game changing blow.
Overall, Gonsalves is happy to have the win.
The following video contains highlights from the Gonsalves vs. Corral bout… along with interviews, including a brief exclusive with Paul Gonsalves’ dad, a retired pugilist with well over 100 fights!
