*** WATCH *** Hyannis Firefighters Pry Trapped Driver from Overturned Jeep with Jaws of Life
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Early Sunday morning, Hyannis firefighters used the Jaws of Life to cut an adult male driver free from his overturned Jeep after a serious crash at the intersection of Main Street and South Street.
Barnstable police and Hyannis fire crews rushed to the scene near 700 Main Street at 12:17 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle rolled over with the driver still trapped inside. First responders worked quickly to stabilize the wreckage while the intersection was fully shut down. Using an array of tools, crews carefully pried the man from the Jeep, then secured him on a stretcher. He was conscious and alert, speaking with medics as he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to Cape Cod Hospital.
The crash knocked a large boulder — complete with a plaque reading “Paul Howland Sherman Square” — off a traffic island and into the middle of South Street. Accident reconstruction investigators documented the scene with a drone flying overhead and spray-painted the boulder’s final resting spot, measuring how far it had been hurled. A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s crime scene unit assisted with photos, while a front-end loader from the Barnstable Department of Public Works eventually lifted the heavy stone out of the roadway.
Once the area was cleared, Capeway Towing righted the Jeep and hauled it to the impound lot. Investigators later headed to the hospital to speak with the driver as their investigation continues. No further details on the cause of the crash or the driver’s condition were released Sunday morning.
