“Am I my brother’s keeper?”
~ Genesis 4
HN NOTES: It was around 3:00 a.m. when police responded to behind the old abandoned bank at 307 Main Street, downtown Hyannis, for a “man stuck in a hole.” The first officers on scene found a man who had somehow fallen into a deep window well. It was a 15-foot drop, more or less.
Hyannis Fire Department dispatched a heavy rescue crew for what was described as a “technical rescue incident.”
A heavy metal grate designed to keep large mammals safely out of the window well had also somehow fallen down into the deep hole.
Officials spoke with the marooned middle-aged gentelman as firefighters fetched an aluminum ladder from the truck. The hole appeared to be someone’s favorite spot, surrounded by empty corn chip bags and three 1.75 Liter jugs of Sea Ice Vodka. Two of the jugs were empty, the third was unopened and ready to go. It remains uncertain whether this morning’s hole dive was alcohol related.
The stranded man, apologetic but relieved, was eventually coaxed up the ladder to safety. He was then loaded unto a stretcher and transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. (While being loaded into the ambulance, he blew a kiss to one of the rescuers – an endearing gesture from a grateful soul now happy to have been helped from a deep, dark hole. For the time being, things were looking up.)
