BUZZARDS BAY, Massachusetts – According to Lieutenant Brandon Esip of the Bourne Police Department, on the evening of Thursday, May 12, 2022, at approximately 9:17 p.m., officers responded to 37 Wallace Ave for a report of male with a stab wound to the face.
Upon arrival, Bourne patrol officers encountered a 40-year-old Mashpee man (who was also known to be recently staying in Bourne) suffering a deep laceration to the right side of his face. The large gash reportedly stretched from his lower cheek to his nostril, according to information provided by Lt. Esip.
Lt. Esip’s media statement continues as follows: “He was conscious and breathing, but uncooperative with the initial police investigation at the scene. He and witnesses were able to provide enough information to indicate the suspect was known to the victim. The victim was transported to an area trauma center where he was treated and released in the morning.
Officers were able to speak with the victim after his release from the hospital. He advised that after work on 05/12, he was hanging out with his employer, Robert White of 22 Mattakese Rd in W. Yarmouth, at Mr. White’s residence. The two started arguing about money owed to the victim by White for damage to a vehicle. White reportedly informed the victim he was going to drive him to where the victim was staying in Buzzards Bay. The argument continued on the ride to Buzzards Bay. When they arrived at Wallace Ave, White reportedly told the victim to get out of the vehicle. As the victim started to get out, White reportedly slashed the victim across the face with a box cutter.”
From there, Bourne Police Detectives continued working the case with the assistance of the Yarmouth Police Department. Yarmouth Police were given a description of the vehicle provided by the victim. As you will hear in the following HN Audio, on Friday, May 13, 2022, shortly before noon, a Yarmouth Police Detective requested the assistance of the Barnstable Police Department patrol division. A Yarmouth Detective was behind a white cargo/utility van traveling along Route 132 in Hyannis. The stabbing suspect was believed to be inside the van.
Exercising an abundance of caution, officers were able to successfully stop the van on Bearses Way.
Robert White of West Yarmouth was arrested during the traffic stop and transported back to Yarmouth Police Headquarters. White was later transferred to Bourne Police custody. According to Lt. Esip, White was charged with Assault to Murder, A&B with a Dangerous Weapon causing Serous Bodily Injury (Box Cutter) and Mayhem. A box cutter was reportedly found in White’s possession during the traffic stop. White was eventually released from Bourne Police custody on $5000 bail, and he was arraigned yesterday – Monday, May 16, 2022 – in Falmouth District Court.
The utility van – the alleged crime scene – was seized by police during the traffic stop and eventually transferred into Bourne Police custody. The vehicle was found to have blood stains inside, according to Lt. Esip.
