MASSACHUSETTS STATE POLICE MEDIA STATEMENT:
“Shortly before 7 p.m., troopers from the State Police Bourne Barracks responded to a multiple-car, fatal crash at the base of the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 west.
Preliminary information indicates that Paul MYERS, 19, of Plymouth was driving in the left lane when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him illegally by shifting into the right lane. While attempting to change lanes, MYERS’s vehicle did not have enough clearance and crashed into a Toyota Corolla already traveling in the right lane. As a result of the contact, the Toyota Corolla hit the curb and spun across the median and crashed into a car traveling in the opposite direction. The head on collision resulted in the death of a 79-year-old woman, Martha Sheldon, who was the passenger of the Toyota Corolla as well as serious injuries to the 83-year-old, male operator of the same vehicle.
For the safety of motorists, investigators, and highway workers, officials closed both lanes of travel to the Cape (Route 6 east) and the left lane of travel off the Cape (Route 6 west) for several hours. In addition to troopers from Troop D, Bourne Fire and Rescue, MassDOT, State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section, and State Police Crime Scene Services Section responded to the scene.
Following the crash, MYERS was taken into custody for suspected operating under the influence (drugs).
The crash remains under investigation.
We offer our condolences to Ms. Sheldon’s loved ones.”
