PHOTOS: Dogs found in unlocked running SUV… owner went shopping… [plus other news briefs]
HYANNIS – Police responded to the parking lot across from Burger King on North Street for a report of two dogs inside a vehicle with the windows completely closed…
A Barnstable Patrolman responded and found two Golden Retrievers inside an unlocked SUV which was running…
The patrolman opened a car door and gingerly rolled down a couple windows. The dogs were not very happy about it, but the officer was not bitten…

Another officer showed up and both cops looked around and waited at least another ten to fifteen minutes for the owner to also show up…
According to witnesses, a female owner returned with shopping bags, saying she had just been shopping…

It’s a good thing the unlocked SUV was discovered by several honest dog-loving young adults… Things could have turned out much worse for the dogs, and owner, especially in that particular part of town…
It remains uncertain whether she accidently forgot to secure the vehicle or not… she reportedly had a bumper sticker which said she loved her dogs…
Yesterday police responded to Staples for a toddler left alone in an unsecured running car… It’s never a good idea to leave kids or pets unattended in running autos. I don’t think it would have been as much of a cause for alarm today had the vehicle been secured with the windows cracked.
UPDATE – 8:20pm – 7/6/2014 – New information… the owner of the dogs did not have an extra key so she decided to leave the door unlocked on purpose… She apparently does love her dogs and wanted to leave the AC on for them… but arguably used very poor judgment in leaving them in an unlocked running motor vehicle in the middle of downtown Hyannis…
UPDATE – The owner was not given a citation, rather officers spoke to her about what would be more appropriate next time… officers likely saw her intentions were to keep her dogs cool while she shopped; she just went about it the wrong way. She was given a break this time…
Case closed.

According to lifeguards from the adjacent public beach, the woman was out swimming and struggling in the choppy waves.
She very likely took in several mouthfuls of water which caused her to panic and gasp for air…
She never really lost consciousness according sources… It was just a very scary and exhausting ordeal which could have turned out much worse.
The middle-aged female was evaluated by rescue but refused further treatment once she was feeling better. She was not transported to CCH.
