*** WATCH *** WEST YARMOUTH NEIGHBORHOOD FLOODS
WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – A neighborhood in the area of Harbor Road and Second Road suddenly flooded last evening prior to midnight. The flooding is believed to have been caused by some type of underground water main break. Yarmouth Fire Department requested the water department and Eversource to respond. The police department closed off the area as firefighters checked in on the residents. Yards filled with water, and in at least one case, a large volume of water began flowing around a house and into the basement. Firefighters shut off the natural gas supply and were waiting for Eversource to shut off electricity to the flooded dwelling. The dwelling in question appeared to be unoccupied at the time of the following video. The area remains blocked off at the time of this report.
UPDATE: As of 4:30 a.m. most of the water had receded and/or flowed to lower ground. A broken water main had caused a good-sized sinkhole on Harbor Road. The utilities were shut off to at least one of the flooded homes, and the Yarmouth Water Department is expected to be on scene making repairs for quite some time. It remains uncertain what damage they will find or how long it will take to make the necessary repairs…
