VIDEO: Flax Pond Conservation Land on fire… firefighters were attacking by hand until wind kicked up…
DENNIS – Firefighters initially tried to battle about 3 acres of smoldering conservation land with shovels and the water they carried in on their back.
But at about 4pm, the fire grew as the wind kicked up and made things more difficult for firefighters out on the ground. Firefighters needed to fall back and await reinforcements and heavy equipment, which was on its way from other FDs across the region.
It was then that fire departments regrouped and attacked the hot spots and advancing fire line.
The Red Cross was on scene providing support and comfort to the busy firefighters. It was a warm day, especially working close to an open brush fire, the Red Cross was there to prevent dehydration by providing plenty of drinking water.
It’s a time which is conducive to forest and brush fires. The weather has been fairly dry lately and our wooded areas could really use a good soaking.
At about 8:30pm, a fire official reported the fire was out and all personnel were out of the woods.
Approximately 4 acres of the Flax Pond Conservation was reported as being burned…
The following video shows the flames and what firefighters were up against…
