WORRIED? LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: ‘LIGHTNING SELDOM STRIKES THE SAME PLACE THRICE!’
HYANNIS, Massachusetts – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER… PLUS THE FOLLOWING BONUS HN VACAY TIP!] – If you’re looking for a safe and sure-shot place to park your weary keister during these impending “summah” months, unfolding a cushy lawn chair somewhere between the First Baptist Church and the iconic Hyannis Inn is an odds-on logical choice! Because as they say, “lightning seldom strikes the same place twice,” and certainly not “thrice!” Which happens to be where we find ourselves at the time of today’s HN notes and mullings…
This past Sunday, in broad daylight, gunfire erupted and a man was struck in the legs in the middle of Main Street between the First Baptist Church and the Hyannis Inn. It happened when tourists and locals were out in numbers, some pushing strollers, others with small kids in tow. A young man was hit [] in both legs. He was first transported to Cape Cod Hospital and then later airlifted to an off-Cape trauma center, for ongoing treatment for his gunshot wounds. His injuries were said to be “non-life-threatening” as of Sunday evening, according to the Barnstable Police.
It’s a good thing others were not injured by Sunday’s downtown gun violence. At least one stray bullet penetrated a hotel room at the Hyannis Inn! according to sources.
The entire spectacle was widely covered by regional media outlets, as well as Boston area TV news broadcasts. CLICK HERE for HN’s initial coverage of the shooting.
HN learned of arrests being made at the time of the shooting, and also received police reports regarding those arrests (some included below). The investigation was unfolding quickly and attempts were made to arrest a prime suspect in both Hyannis and Yarmouth Monday evening. According to sources, the Yarmouth Police Department were able to locate and arrest the juvenile male (late Monday evening) mentioned in the following District Attorney’s media statement.
In a separate incident, as everyone in the downtown area was still on edge Monday evening, with an abundance of police resources out searching for the aforementioned “gunman” – many nearly exhausted officers sacrificing sleep and personal time to do so – a group of five teens from off-Cape decided to make their presence known and were promptly arrested at gunpoint in the exact same location of Sunday’s shooting. (HN police sources do not believe they were connected to Sunday’s “gunplay.”) A small army of Barnstable Police officers swarmed the traffic stop in front of the First Baptist Church after receiving a report that someone had possibly flashed a gun at people in front of a nearby Main Street watering hole – one named after a common species of waterfowl. There was no gun found during the stop, but all five were arrested for being minors in possession of booze… with two being also charged with making “terroristic threats.” No word whether they were also charged with being Young Wanton Jackasses in Nighttime… CLICK HERE for HN’s initial coverage and video of that particular horror show…
Wait, there’s more! Remember the disturbing incident where a vehicle was struck with gunfire at Craigville Beach about a month ago? Well, as you will read below, the juvenile male arrested Monday evening for the Sunday shooting on Main Street, Hyannis, was also charged with the beach parking lot shooting. ADDITIONAL ARRESTS – ACTUAL B.P.D. POLICE REPORTS regarding Sunday’s shooting:
[Barnstable Police Sgt. Kevin Fullam’s report]
“On Sunday 6/25/23 I was working as the road supervisor for the evening shift. At approximately 16:30 hrs dispatch received numerous 911 calls for gunshots in the area of Main St and High School Rd in Hyannis.
When I arrived on scene, I observed Ptl O’melia providing medical attention to David McIntyre [] on the sidewalk in front of Hyannis Inn located at 473 Main St, Hyannis. I observed McIntyre to be suffering from numerous apparent gunshot wounds on both of his legs. I observed a significant amount of blood on the sidewalk and edge of the roadway as well as two shell casings under McIntyre’s legs. I also observed numerous other shell casings in the left travel lane of Main St headed toward the direction of High School Rd. I also observed Jacob Roderick [] standing next to McIntyre with blood on his arms. Roderick stated that he was helping McIntyre. Standing behind Roderick, I observed Christopher Calle-Maldonado [], Allan Monteiro [], Nicholas Westphal [], and Daishawn Williams [].
As Hyannis Fire was treating McIntyre, I was aware of a motor vehicle accident located at the intersection of South St and High School Rd. Evidence located at the accident scene including shell casings identified one of the vehicles, a black sedan (Ma 4BDP94) in the accident as being involved with the shooting scene on Main St. Investigating officers at that scene were searching for two suspects who were observed fleeing the accident scene, eastbound towards Town Hall.
While these two chaotic scenes were rapidly changing and evolving, Roderick, Calle-Maldonado, Monteiro, and Westphal expressed visible concern for McIntyre, even offering up the fact that a black sedan was involved in the shooting. Williams was dismissive of the police and refused to even provide his name when asked. Based on William’s demeanor and lack of cooperation, he was informed that he was free to leave and asked to stay out of the crime scene tape.
Several moment later, I observed William’s now standing at the intersection of Main St and High School Rd. I observed him standing with Monteiro as well as two subjects identified Gabriel Leite [] and Mason Gonsalves []. At this time Williams was again told that he was free to leave and asked to step away from the crime scene on Main St. [….] it was also reported that Leite was also involved and [he was] subsequently detained in a cruiser. At this time, Williams who was still standing at the intersection of High School Rd and Main St was heard by officers questioning why [a suspect] was being placed in the back of the cruiser and that he was going to walk up to the cruiser. Det. Atcheson directed Williams and Monteiro to stay away from the cruiser on two separate occasions and was again informed that they were free to leave and they were also asked to leave the area.
At this time I observed Williams and Monteiro walk directly into the middle of the intersection and begin walking toward the cruisers as well as the second scene currently unfolding at the intersection of South St and High School Rd. I ordered Williams and Monteiro to get out of the intersection and to change their course of direction. Williams then pointed toward the intersection of South St and High School Rd and stated, I am going that way. Williams and Monteiro refused to obey my commands to get out of the middle of the roadway and began walking towards the cruisers and the second crime scene while staying in the middle of the road. Their actions of being in the middle of the road not only hindered the ongoing investigation but created an unsafe and hazardous environment with no apparent or legitimate purpose. Both Williams and Monteiro’s actions and behavior were taking away from my ability to conduct my investigation or manage the scene and the other officers. Williams and Monteiro were asked numerous times to leave the area and stay out of the active and ongoing scenes. Due to their actions of refusing to get out of the roadway, as well as their behavior that hindered the investigation, I informed them both that they were under arrest for Disorderly Conduct and Interference with a Police Officers. Both Williams and Monteiro were handcuffed D/L to the rear and transported…” [Sgt. Fullam’s narrative ends here]
Daishawn Davonte Williams, 20, of Hyannis, was charged with Interference with a Police Officer and Disorderly Conduct.
Allan Monteiro Jr., 25, of Hyannis, was charged with Interference with a Police Officer and Disorderly Conduct.
Gabriel Carlos-Souza Leite, 21, of Hyannis, was charged with Possession of a Class B Drug and Possession of a Class A Drug.
[Excerpts from Barnstable Police Officer Nolan O’Melia’s report]
“… I observed two males subjects known to me as Gabriel Leite and Mason Gonsalves now in the area of High School Rd and Main St. Leite and Gonsalves were engaged in conversation with two uncooperative witnesses of the shooting, Daishawn Williams and Allan Monteiro Jr. after they were dismissed from the crime scene area. […..] It was then I learned that Leite was also present for the shooting. Given this information and fact that Leite had fled from the area following the shooting, it was determined he too would be detained pending further investigation…
Williams and Monteiro Jr. then became displeased with Leite and [another man] being detained therefore Leite was escorted away from the area towards a nearby cruiser, E232… Immediately upon frisking Leite’s right pant pocket I felt what I believed to be plastic baggie… I then removed the baggie and observed several dozen blue pills. I then conducted a further search into Leite’s right front pocket and removed an additional plastic baggie with white rock substance, consistent with crack cocaine.
… Det. Jackson conducted a field test of items secured which test positive for crack cocaine and the pills tested positive for fentanyl.”
